People, Pride, Progress

 Illustration for the National Railway Museum

Project Background

The client from the National Railway Museum (UK) reached out to me with a reference — one of my previous illustrations featuring a diverse group of people with Pride rainbow elements .

Using that style as a starting point, I created a new, custom illustration tailored specifically to their exhibition on LGBTQ+ lived experiences in the railway industry.

Sketch Phase

The first sketch featured 10 characters in a variety of railway uniforms, along with a classic rainbow Pride flag. The style was black and white with bold rainbow accents on accessories.

Following client feedback:

- The group was expanded to 16–20 people, with a broader mix of ages, appearances, and clothing;

- Additional flags were added, including the Progress Pride flag (with pink, blue, brown, and black stripes) and the Trans Pride flag;

- Some characters now wear t-shirts with the words “Pride” and “Progress” in rainbow lettering;

These updates made the final illustration more inclusive, dynamic, and visually impactful.

 Final Illustration

The final artwork features a diverse group of 16 LGBTQ+ railway workers in both historical and modern uniforms — including hi-vis clothing, caps, ties, and office wear.

It incorporates:

Pride, Progress Pride, and Trans Pride flags

Rainbow-themed accessories: daisy chain necklace, pins, caps

T-shirts with “Pride” and “Progress” in rainbow lettering

A separate Pride-striped railway track element designed to run across the leaflet or wrap around its cover

Created in my signature black-and-white style with vibrant Pride accents, the illustration was delivered as a print-ready digital file for use in the exhibition leaflet, posters, and online promotion.
